Hi Bob! Human 21:25, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Hi guys. I had intended to do some stuff here but vacations and computer problems are conspiring against me.Bob M 18:18, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
We will be here, don't forget us! PuRple scissorʇɐןʞ 21:08, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Cheers.--Bob M 16:22, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
No problem with the links. They would have to be actual spam before there would be a problem, or you would have to be in some way burdening our database doing something bad to our Google or something. PuRple scissorʇɐןʞ 21:28, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
There's a link to here at the teflpedia list, too. It would be nice to see a few RWians pop in and find their way around. Human 23:09, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Creating a wandal bin

Any hints you can give Purple Scissor on creating a wandal bin? Other folks, like Human, forgot how to create one, and believe that you may have the answer.Sweepy 04:29, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

You mean vandal break from RationalWiki? That might work on some trolls, but others are too smart and just create socks. Wikis are too open in some ways. PuRple scissorʇɐןʞ 04:37, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes, the totally insane ones will, but when one sees two page blankings and vandal bins them, they still have to make a new user... oh, by the way, Bob, tell PS how limit new users' edits like you did on teflonwiki. See, if the vandal bin limits edits to one or two an hour, and "brand new" editors can also only edit every, say, 10 minutes, that takes all the fun away. All without blocking them, which is part of what trolls enjoy. Human 05:01, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
The solution to getting a vandal break is quite simple. You sacrifice a goat to either Trent T at Rational wiki (down until the 6th of September) or you ask User:Nx also of Rationalwiki - who you might be able to contact at Teflpedia. Trent installed mine at TP but he had to bodge the code round a bit for my version of mediawiki and that took him some time. I also had to give Trent root access to my wiki to enable him to install it. Nx later re-wrote the code for RW - but I have no idea how much effort it would involve inserting it here. I seem to recall that there was some comment to the effect that he had made the code publicly available, but I'm not sure.
The other advantage of the vandal break is that it automatically reduces the editing rate of new users so that they re unable to make a series of rapid edits.
While PS is right that trolls can get round the brake by creating sock accounts and editing, it takes time. Especially if you create a new user account rather than edit as an IP. Trolls/vandals also crave recognition so they will want to find some way of telling you it's them. So it's question of balance. You will want to keep the wiki as open to editing as possible while giving the trolls vandals problems. You want it to be more difficult for them to edit than it is for you to revert and stop them. I think the vandal break does a good job of this - or as good as you're going to get.
Having said all that, it's up to Trent or Nx to do any work necessary or point you to the code and I can't speak for them. Presumably they have many other things to do with their time.--Bob M 09:19, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
