WikiSynergy:Linking
Contents |
We ask that you link to us! This helps us to gain a higher profile on search engines like Google, so that more people will see this site. But it also helps you: if you or your organization have a page on WikiSynergy, it won't do you any good if no one knows this site exists. Linking is good for everyone, and it is how you "pay" for using this site (and it will probably remain the only way).
If you can't link to us because you don't have a website, then you can still recommend us by clicking the links in the "share this" box on the lower left. You can also tell your friends about us, and they can come and list their websites (and return our links).
You can of course link to any page, but a basic link looks like this in html code:
<a href="http://www.wikisynergy.com">WikiSynergy</a>
Which will give you WikiSynergy
Limits on linking
There are some limits:
- Links to other websites should go to pages which are well developed, highly informative and containing reliable information. The principle is that the reader should be glad that they clicked the link because they gained something significant by doing so.
- All links have to be directly, obviously and significantly relevant to the subject of the particular page they are on (in addition to being relevant to the site as a whole).
- No more than 50 external links per page.
- Exception: on pages about organizations or groups, we intend to give greater leeway, so that people can have the links they desire.
- Any site containing offensive content, including offensive advertisements, may be removed at our discretion.
- At user discretion, all but the 10 most relevant links may be hidden in an expandable box using {{hat}} and {{hab}}. By "discretion" we mean that whoever wants to do this gets their way, but subject to administrative oversight of WikiSynergy.
Other Rules
Note: If we review a page in the Collaboration namespace and do not find a link back, or find that the link has the nofollow property, we will delete the page without discussion (see sections below on how to turn "nofollow" off).
We will allow pages (but not irrelevant or low-relevance links on other pages except userpages) in our Collaboration namespace for any site which returns our links even when they are not specially relevant to our basic mission, under the following conditions:
- They meet the other criteria on this page (except relevance).
- They give us genuine links back. At the present time, this means that their links are visible and do not contain the rel="nofollow" property, or in some other way prevent the link from being of use to WikiSynergy relative to our Google ranking or general prominence.
- Are not using a mere comment on a blog or other such means to link back to us. A person looking at the link should understand that the webmaster wanted to link to us. If the site is a wiki, the link should be on an article page, not a talk page.
- Are not set up for commercial purposes,[1] or otherwise constitute spam.
- We are cognizant of the fact that there may easily be abuse of this policy, even by well-intentioned people, and we reserve the right to change it at any time, and to delete pages which were allowed under former policy, but which are not allowed under current policy.
- Our ability to monitor compliance with this policy may lead to freezes on new link pages, in which case new pages may be blanked or deleted- though those pages already on WikiSynergy will probably be retained. This may be unfair, but life is that way. Sorry.
- Do not use very much media, such as pictures, video, and audio, or large amounts of text.
How to turn off the "nofollow" property in Mediawiki
According to the Google blog "From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel="nofollow") on hyperlinks, those links won't get any credit when we rank websites in our search results."
In your LocalSettings.php file, put
$wgNoFollowLinks = false;
That's it.
How to turn off the "nofollow" property in Wordpress
It should also be possible to turn off the property in WordPress.
Notes
- ↑ By which we mean, that in order to get any good out of the site you must buy a product.
